Denethor II is a character in The Lord of the Rings. He was portrayed by John Noble. Denethor is the father of Faramir and Boromir and father in law of Éowyn.

History[]

Background[]

During The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Denethor is not yet the lord of Gondor. Instead it was his father. He was ten years old at the time of this battle. Denethor marries Finduilas and has two sons, Faramir and Boromir. When his wife dies, Denethor raises his two sons, but shows more favoritism towards his eldest son, Boromir. He later tells his son to go to Rivendell.

He grows to hate Gandalf the Grey, especially his association with his youngest son, Faramir.

The Return of the King[]

When newly resurrected Gandalf the White and his hobbit companion, Peregrin Took. After asking about Boromir's death, Pippin swears loyalty to the Lord Denethor in debt for Boromir saving his and Merry's life. Denethor refuses to heed Gandalf's warning, and sends them away.

Denethor orders Faramir to re-take Osgiliath. However, he sends his son to his death. Believing Faramir to be dead, Denethor has a Pyre built and plans to kill himself without realizing Faramir is alive. He casts Pippin out of his service, but Pippin returns with Gandalf. Denethor sets the pyre on fire, but Gandalf casts Denethor off the pyre and Pippin rescues Faramir. Denethor attacks the Hobbit, but Gandalf knocks him off of his friend, but Denethor accidentally falls onto the Pyre.

  • He is only mentioned in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring and was first identified in The Two Towers.
  • John Noble filmed scenes for Denethor for the second Lord of the Rings film but his scenes were cu. They were restored in the extended version of The Two Towers.
  • Owns a palantir.
